After training with two of the world’s foremost experts of open hip surgeries, Drs. Joel Matta and Jeffrey Mast, Dr. Ferguson quickly became celebrated worldwide for her surgical skills and academic contributions to the fields of pelvis and acetabular fracture surgery and hip preservation surgery (Periacetabular Osteotomy: PAO and Surgical Hip Dislocation). She has also played a pivotal role in the advancement of the anterior approach total hip arthroplasty and its expansion in the United States.
Dr. Ferguson’s practice is based on a profound understanding of the hip and pelvis anatomy as well as the mechanical relationship between the femur and the acetabulum (or socket). Her mastery of the hip anatomy comes after more than a decade as the Director of Pelvic and Acetabular Fracture Surgery at the University of California, Davis.
During this time, her clinical and academic focus on severe injuries to the pelvis, acetabulum, and femur allowed her to learn every nuance of the hip and pelvis anatomy. Her surgical skill and excellent patient outcomes, publications and academic achievements and her innovative advancements of the techniques utilized for these complex injuries quickly made her internationally recognized as a thought leader in hip and pelvic surgery.

Dr. Ferguson’s profound understanding of the hip and pelvis anatomy is the foundation of her practice in hip preservation surgery. Her experience with the anatomy and the restoration of the mechanical relationships of the hip and pelvis allows her to plan and execute reorientation osteotomies of the hip and pelvis expertly. Her abilities and outcomes with the Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO), Surgical Hip Dislocation (SHD), and femoral osteotomies for hip dysplasias and developmental abnormalities are well recognized. Dr. Ferguson pursued fellowship training with Dr. Jeffrey Mast, one of the founders of the PAO surgery, and is considered one of Dr. Mast’s most skilled and precise disciples. Understanding the abnormalities leading to pathological mechanics in the dysplastic hip and surgically rebuilding the osseous architecture to optimize the hip mechanics is why her patients travel great distances seeking diagnosis and care for complicated deformities, revision surgeries, and failed first attempts.

19 yo woman with acetabular dysplasia, proximal femoral abnormalities and a leg deformity. She underwent a periacetabular osteotomy, femoral osteotomy and labral repair. 12 years later she is a nurse without a limp and with no hip pain in California.
Dr. Ferguson has played a pivotal role in the evolution of the Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement in the United States, after her year’s fellowship with Dr. Joel Matta in 2004. She has utilized the aTHA as her sole approach for elective hip replacement since the inception of her practice, well over a decade ago. Her research, publications, and innovative techniques have helped expand the indications of the Anterior Approach to fractures of the hip and acetabulum, and she educates surgeons in aTHA surgery worldwide. She serves as the Education Committee Chairman for the Anterior Hip Foundation and she is instrumental in the education of residents, fellows, and surgeons who are learning this procedure for hip replacement. Her practice allows many patients the benefit of outpatient surgery, and she helps patients return to unlimited functional activities after this tissue sparing technique for hip replacement surgery.

Traveling the world as an educator of hip surgery, she has reached millions of patients by teaching surgeons these complex hip surgical techniques. She is dedicated to training the next generations of surgeons to be able to better treat their own patients by detailed examination and diagnosis and precision with surgical technique. Publications, book chapters, and innovative technique videos further expand her influence to improve patient care. She utilizes her teaching skills to help her patients understand complex hip disorders and has developed exceptional educational materials for her patients.
Dr. Ferguson has been associated with the AO Foundation as faculty and now serves as the first elected woman trustee for the international organization, which reaches every corner of the globe to elevate the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. While Dr. Ferguson’s greatest pride is her surgical outcomes and her patient’s satisfaction, she feels that her work within the AO and the experiences gained from this organization represent the most important pillars of her career.
Dr. Ferguson’s move to Nashville was inspired by the merger of her expertise in open hip surgeries with the revolutionary work of Dr. J.W. Thomas Byrd. Combining their individual expertise and unique backgrounds in hip surgery, they offer a vast range of interventions at masterful surgical skill levels to virtually any patient seeking care for hip pain.
