Boxing Contestant on "The Contender" Undergoes Surgery and Expected to Make Full Recovery

Nashville, Tenn. (October 12, 2006) -- Vinroy Barrett, a boxer on season two of “The Contender,” an ESPN reality television series, underwent surgery this morning at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

Mike Pagnani, M.D. of Nashville Knee and Shoulder Center, performed surgery to repair the subscapularis tendon in the front part of Barrett’s shoulder, which was injured during The Contender finale in September at the Staples Center in Los Angeles during his bout against Walter Wright.

“Vinroy’s surgery was a good repair and I expect him to make a full recovery,” said Dr. Pagnani. “Within four to six months he will be able to perform at the same level he did before the injury.”

Barrett injured his shoulder in the show’s finale and continued for another round until the fight was stopped.

Vinroy Barrett is a professional boxer and former WBF America’s Welterweight titleholder. Earlier in his career, he was the four-time Jamaican Amateur Boxing Champion, won a bronze medal in the Junior Olympics in Puerto Rico and earned an alternative spot on the Jamaican National Team. Barrett is a native of Negril, Jamaica and now resides in Nashville, Tenn.
